How To Protect Wooden Sleepers From Rotting

Timber sleepers

Wooden sleepers are a popular choice for garden landscaping and railway tracks alike, but without proper care, they can quickly succumb to rot and decay. At Planet Timber, we understand the importance of maintaining the longevity and appearance of your wooden sleepers. Here are some tips and recommendations on how to protect them from rotting.

Choose the Right Products

The type of product you use to treat your wooden sleepers will depend on the desired effect and the type of wood. Here are a few options:

  • Clear Wood Oil or Decking Oil: These products are ideal for those who want their sleepers to age naturally to a grey or silver colour while still being protected from the elements. A clear oil will nourish the wood, making it supple and water-resistant, which helps protect it from water and frost damage.
  • Creosolve: While traditional Creosote is no longer available to the general public, Creosolve is an excellent substitute that is more user and environmentally friendly. It is available in light and dark brown formulas and is well-suited for use on railway sleepers.

Treatment Depending on Sleeper Type

  • Reclaimed Hardwood Sleepers: Often made from high-grade Oak or exotic hardwoods, these sleepers can last for decades if not buried in the ground or submerged in water. If left untreated, they will turn grey over time due to sun exposure and water. To prolong their life, consider using a wood preservative or wood oil.
  • New Reproduction Sleepers: Available in Oak and Pine, these sleepers should be treated with an exterior wood preservative on all sides before installation. Follow up with a clear or coloured decking oil, paying special attention to any sawn ends.

Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial for preserving the life of your wooden sleepers. Here are some steps to follow:

  • Annual Treatment: Treat your sleepers with wood oil or decking oil at least twice a year, ideally in Spring and Autumn. This will help repel water and prevent water ingress, the main cause of wood rot.
  • Inspection and Repair: Regularly inspect your sleepers for signs of rot. If you find any, remove the rotted wood, apply a wood hardener, and fill any gaps with exterior wood filler. Treat the remaining sound wood with an exterior wood preservative.

Dealing with Rot

If your sleepers have already started to rot, it can be challenging to stop the process. However, you can slow it down by following these steps:

  1. Remove Rotted Wood: Remove as much of the rotted wood as possible.
  2. Apply Wood Hardener: Use a product like Ronseal Wet Rot Wood Hardener on the affected areas.
  3. Repair and Treat: Fill any holes or gaps with exterior wood filler and treat the remaining wood with a preservative and oil.

Protecting your wooden sleepers from rotting requires the right products and regular maintenance. At Planet Timber, we recommend using clear wood oils, Creosolve, and regular inspections to keep your sleepers in top condition. By following these tips, you can ensure that your wooden sleepers remain a durable and attractive feature in your garden or railway for many years to come.
